The AusAID Bursary Scheme for International Students

The AMUNC 2010 Host Team in conjunction with AusAID are pleased to announce that applications for the 2010 AusAID Bursary Scheme are now open. The scheme is open to students who are not Australian citizens and studying outside of Australia.

AusAID is the Australian Government agency responsible for managing Australia's overseas aid program. The objective of the aid program is to assist developing countries reduce poverty and achieve sustainable development, in line with Australia's national interest. This is the second year running in which AusAID has provided valuable support to AMUNC to ensure that the conference remains true to its Asia-Pacific scope and international feel. > Read more about AusAID

Both AusAID and the AMUNC 2010 Host Team believe that neither geographical distance nor financial hardship should inhibit talented and enthusiastic students from attending AMUNC. This scheme attempts to address these constraints by offering a limited number of bursaries for motivated and talented international delegates to assist in attending AMUNC 2010.

We especially encourage delegates from developing countries to apply.

Available Bursaries

The following funding is available:

AusAID International Bursary  A$275 (Registration Cost)

Awarded on the basis of financial need and merit to international delegates.

AusAID International Assistance Scholarship $A475

Awarded to highly promising international delegates facing particularly significant financial hardship. The scholarship is designed to cover both the cost of conference registration as well as basic accommodation within Sydney for the duration of the conference. Only four of these scholarships are currently available.

The amounts specified are in Australian dollars. The Selection Panel, at its discretion, may alter the precise amounts awarded to candidates if it feels that circumstances provide for a higher amount to be awarded to select delegates based on distinctive cases of financial hardship.

How to Apply

  1. Fill out the online form by 25 June 2010, 5pm Australian Eastern Standard Time.
  2. Email all supporting documentation to bursaries@amunc.net with the following subject title:
    Bursary Application – [NAME], [COUNTRY]
Replace [NAME] with your full name and [COUNTRY] with the country where you currently live.
This documentation should preferably be sent before 22 June, but see the FAQ on what to do if you can't meet this deadline or have trouble emailing files.

Documentation should include:

  • proof of enrolment at your university/educational institution (a copy of your current student card is fine)
  • copy of passport

Judging Process

All applications will be carefully considered by the Bursary Scheme Selection Panel, which is made up of representatives from different areas of the Host Team.

Applications will be considered under the following criteria:

  • Potential contribution to the conference: eg. previous Model UN experience, demonstration of relevant Model-UN skills through public speaking, debating, mooting, special research projects, leadership experience etc.
  • Financial need due to financial hardship and/or elevated costs in attending the conference due to a large distance travelled, special needs etc.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to apply separately for each scholarship?

No, your application will automatically be considered for both awards, unless you specify otherwise.

I want to apply for a bursary; however I won’t be able to obtain the required documents in time for the deadline. What should I do?

While we encourage all delegates applying for the bursaries to include documents with their application we understand that the application time is small and are prepared to accept documentation after the application date, only if a fully completed application form is provided before the closing date. In the event that a delegate is awarded a bursary and is unable to provide the documentation required, the AMUNC 2010 Host Team reserves the right to revoke the awarding of the bursary.

I come from a country/region where the internet connection isn’t fast enough to allow me to access the form or upload attachments to email. What should I do?

Firstly, email bursaries@amunc.net immediately to notify us if this is the case. We can provide you with an emailed version of the form and a mailing address for you to send your documents via post.

I have already registered and paid for AMUNC, can I still apply for the Bursaries program?

Yes you certainly can. Due to the nature of the deadlines, only those international students who have registered to come to AMUNC are eligible for the bursary.

I am an international student who is currently studying in Australia. Am I eligible for this program?

No. Only international students who are not currently studying in Australia will be eligible.

I am an Australian citizen/have dual citizenship who is studying overseas at the moment. Am I eligible for the program?

Unfortunately Australian citizens are not eligible to apply for this bursary scheme.

When will I find out if I am successful?

We hope to notify all successful applicants AS SOON AS POSSIBLE after the deadline.

How and when will I receive the money if I am successful in obtaining a bursary?

If you are successful for Option 1 (where the registration cost is waived) you will be receiving a cheque for the sum of the registration cost when you attend AMUNC in July. However, if you are successful in obtaining a different kind (eg Option 2 or customised), the AMUNC selectors will contact you about options.

I was awarded a bursary, but can now no longer attend the conference. My friend comes from the same country and we study the same degree. Can he/she be awarded the bursary on my behalf?

Unfortunately, given the limited bursaries available, we cannot allow the bursary to be transferable. Each person must apply in their own right.

I missed out on a bursary – is there a chance I could still receive financial assistance?

There is a very small chance that there will be bursaries awarded to delegates who either choose not to accept them, will have their bursary revoked, or will no longer attend the conference. If the Selection Committee feels that there are applicants who were desirable candidates for receiving a bursary that were previously unsuccessful, they will be considered once again, and be notified if they have been successful as soon as possible.

We also encourage students to seek financial support, either individually or through their delegation, from either their educational institution or other prospective organisations within their community e.g. Lions/Rotary Clubs, youth organisations, interest groups etc. Please contact the AMUNC 2010 International Liaison Officer to request the AMUNC Sponsorship Guide and other materials.
