FAQ
If you have a question not answered below, don’t hesitate to contact us.
Who can attend?
AMUNC is open only to university students ages 17 years and above – both Australian and international. Each year AMUNC attracts students from all areas of study. If you are a high school student in Victoria, then you can get involved with AMUNC by taking up one of our internship positions.
How much does AMUNC cost?
The fee for delegates and directors is yet to be finalised, but will be announced ahead of the opening of Director registration in January.
What is included in the conference fee?
The registration fee covers all committee sessions, formal events (such as opening/closing ceremonies and speaker events) and entry to socials. Some socials are covered entirely, such as the finale ball, where your meals and drinks are included. Please note that not all transport will be covered.
Where do I stay during AMUNC?
You will need to organise your own accommodation. Luckily, there are numerous options to suit all budgets, from the cheaply affordable to luxury both in the city and close to the university. We will offer an accommodation guide to delegates well ahead of the conference – stay tuned!
What is a special committee?
Generally, these attract the very keen and enthusiastic. You may find a higher-level of debate as well as diplomatic and negotiation skills in these committees. Often you need prior Model UN, debating and/or mooting experience in order to be part of one; however this is not always the case! Special committees include: Security Council, Crisis Council, International Court of Justice, International Criminal Court, Sixth General Assembly.
What is a delegation?
A delegation is a group of students from the same university who wish to attend AMUNC. Generally speaking, a delegation has at least 5 students. Delegations receive priority in registration; but you can still attend if you’re not part of one!
Do I have a delegation?
Check to see if your university has a United Nations Society, a Politics Society, or an International Relations Society. If so, it is highly likely that there is already a delegation, and you should be able to join it if so. If there isn’t a society of this type, you can start one if there are other students from your university who wish to attend. If you’re not sure if your university already has a delegation, contact us.
I’m a Head Delegate. What does this mean?
As you will be leading the team from your university, you will be responsible for registering your delegation and distributing any information that is sent from the AMUNC2012 Secretariat. You will also be the first point of contact if any issues arise from your delegates. If there are queries that you cannot solve, feel free to contact the Deputy Secretary-General for Delegate Relations, Tamara Preuss, via info@amunc.net. More information for Head Delegates will be made available in the near future.
How does registration work?
Key dates for registration can be found here. Director registration will be first up, in January. In February we will begin accepting applications for special committees, a full list of which will be made available. We will open registration to delegations after that, in March. Head delegates will be allocated certain countries, and delegates will be able to apply to represent those. Please note that a delegate cannot represent his or her country of origin. More information on attending the conference can be found here.
Can I be part of the AMUNC Host Team?
Unfortunately applications have already closed for this.
What happens at AMUNC?
Every day there will be committee sessions, where you debate and discuss a certain topic. There are also night time social and formal events, where high-profile guest speakers will share their expertise on a certain topic. Please refer to the about page for further information.
When should I get to Melbourne?
If you’re a director, you should arrive so that you are available all day on Saturday 7th July. This day is very important for training and to prepare you for the week. If you’re a delegate, you need to be at La Trobe on Sunday 8th July to check in to your committees, receive your conference guide and attend information sessions.
Is there a Letter of Invitation for international delegates?
Yes, it will be provided ahead of time. If your university requires a personalised letter, please contact international@amunc.net. Note that this is not a confirmation of registration. All international delegates will receive a letter confirming registration after completion of registration and payment.
How do I get to Melbourne?
Melbourne is easily accessible from major cities such as Sydney, Jakarta and Auckland. Coach companies such as Greyhound have daily services from major Australian cities to Melbourne, while airlines such as Virgin, Jetstar or Qantas operate multiple daily flights for overseas guests. Please note that many international flights land in Sydney for customs. A more detailed transport guide will be provided ahead of the conference.
Just how brilliant is Melbourne?
There is never a dull moment in Melbourne! Melbourne offers a unique cultural experience and its subtle grandeur never fails to impress. Please refer to the about Melbourne page for further information.
